EMPLOYING YOUNG PEOPLE

There are fairly stringent employment guidelines for employing people under the age of 18. The minimum legal age for a young person to start paid work is 14, although in some areas local by-laws allow working at 13 for various jobs – check with your local authority.

In any event, young people of school age:

  • cannot work during school hours
  • cannot work before 7am or after 7pm
  • cannot work for more than 2 hours on any school weekday (maximum1 hr before school)
  • cannot work for more than 2 hrs on Sunday or more than 8 hours on Saturdays or school holidays (5 hrs if under 15)
  • cannot work more than 35 hrs in the holidays (or 25 if under 15)
  • should have a 2 week break during the school holidays
  • cannot work for more than 12 hrs in a school week

This legislation is constantly changing, too, so keep yourself updated (your Local Authority can help).
