SELF ASSESSMENT OF TAX

Self-assessment applies to everyone who has to complete a tax return, and includes self-employed people as well as people who are partners in a business. If you’re in business, you must send in a tax return each year showing details of your income, any capital gains, tax relief and allowances.

You can also work out your own tax bill, although the HM Revenue & Customs will do this for you if you send in your return before 30 September. If you send it in after 30 September, they can still work out what you owe, but they can’t guarantee to let you know by the 31 January deadline. You can also file your tax return via the Internet. For more information, go to www.hmrc.gov.uk
